Indonesian Supreme Court Ruling Final in Business Dispute, Lawyer Says

Legal representatives and associates pose at a courthouse in Central Java following a civil dispute that was ultimately resolved by Indonesia’s Supreme Court. The ruling, which has become legally binding, marked the end of a prolonged business conflict and reaffirmed the authority of final judicial decisions.

- The legal counsel for Indonesian businessman Anthon Donovan has said a long-running civil dispute with fellow entrepreneur Teguh Susilo has reached its final conclusion after the Supreme Court issued a binding ruling in his client’s favor.

Djoko Susanto, Donovan’s attorney, rejected earlier media narratives describing the case as an “unequal legal battle,” stressing that Indonesia’s Supreme Court has issued a final and legally binding decision.

“The Supreme Court’s ruling is clear and final,” Djoko told reporters on Thursday. “Any suggestion that this was an unbalanced fight is no longer relevant.”

Supreme Court Rejects Cassation Appeal

Djoko referred to Supreme Court Decision No. 892 K/Pdt/2025, which rejected a cassation appeal filed by Teguh Susilo and Suratmi through their legal representatives. The ruling upheld a previous decision by the Semarang High Court.

In that decision, the court not only dismissed Teguh Susilo’s lawsuit but also granted a counterclaim filed by Donovan. The court found Teguh Susilo and Suratmi in breach of contract and ordered them to pay damages totaling 2.1 billion rupiah (approximately USD 135,000), including obligations related to a bank loan at Bank Central Asia (BCA).

Dispute Rooted in Business Partnership

The case stemmed from a failed business partnership involving timber and sugar trading between Donovan and Teguh Susilo. Donovan initially filed a lawsuit at the Banyumas District Court, where his claim was dismissed at first instance.

Following that ruling, Teguh Susilo’s legal team publicly commented on the case, asserting that the lawsuit lacked clarity and suggesting it bordered on criminal allegations.

Lawyer Criticizes Personal Attacks

Djoko Susanto said some of those earlier statements went beyond legal argument and amounted to personal attacks, prompting his decision to issue a formal clarification.

He emphasized that all parties, particularly legal professionals, should respect judicial decisions and uphold ethical standards when addressing the public.

“The legal process has concluded,” Djoko said. “Court rulings must be respected, and public statements should reflect the facts established by law.”

The full ruling is publicly accessible through Indonesia’s Supreme Court decision directory.
